What does a membrane sweep feel like

We’d be lying if we said it was entirely comfortable, but it shouldn’t be painful. It will feel more like having an internal examination or a cervical smear. If you were in labour you would probably not notice the discomfort, but because you’re not yet having contractions when a sweep is performed you’ll definitely feel it. It recommends practising breathing and relaxation techniques to help minimise any discomfort.

How long does it take?

  • Not long at all – five to ten minutes at most, a bit like a smear test.
