Seizure

Seizure is the physical findings or changes in behavior that occur after an episode of abnormal electrical activity in the brain. A seizure usually affects how a person appears or acts for a short time.

The term “seizure” is often used interchangeably with “convulsion.” During convulsions a person has uncontrollable shaking that is rapid and rhythmic, with the muscles contract and relax repeatedly. There are many different types of seizures. Some have mild symptoms without shaking.

Many different things can occur during a seizure. Whatever the brain and body can do normally can also occur during a seizure.

The nature of seizures varies, because the lobes of the brain control different behaviors, movements and experiences.

Seizures are not a disease in themselves. Instead, they are a symptom of many different disorders that can affect the brain. Some seizures can hardly be noticed, while others are totally disabling.
